Vocational and Commercial Education

We provide sustainable, high-quality education for the microfinance sector.

The overall objective of the project “Vocational and Commercial Education for the Microfinance Sector in Eastern Africa” is to contribute to poverty reduction in Eastern Africa (SDG 1). The aim of the project is to improve the financial inclusion of poor populations in Eastern Africa by providing a sustainable, high-quality education for the microfinance sector, both for management and employees of umbrella organizations and MFIs but also for MFI clients. Through vocational and commercial education, the beneficiaries (special target groups are farmers, micro-entrepreneurs, refugees, women, children) better understand and apply the benefits of financial products to increase their personal financial resilience.

Through partner institutions, the microfinance institutions and their employees and customers are supported and trained. Furthermore, Business Games are regularly conducted in all project countries. Through trainings of Master Trainers and Trainers the outreach of these measures is increased. In Rwanda, a Dual Apprenticeship system is in place since 2017 and will soon be introduced in other project countries. Microfinance Academies are established in Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Other important project objectives are the introduction of mystery shopping, financial education in schools, coaching of managers of big MFIs, and the World Savings Day. This regional project is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
